The Spellshop is the first book in a trilogy by Sarah Beth Durst. The Spellshop follows Kiela, a librarian at the Great Library of Alyssium. A revolution begins in her city, the emperor is killed, and the library is burned down. Kiela and her plant friend Caz were able to escape the fire with their lives and several crates of books. Kiela goes to the only place she can think of, the island where she grew up. The book follows Kiela’s adventures and mishaps on the island.
This book was cute. There were several parts that made me smile. My favorite character was Caz. He sounds like he would be a really fun friend to have. I really enjoyed the banter between Caz and Kiela.
One complaint that I have about this book is that it feels very YA and not in a good way. I know the book is not characterized as YA but it feels that way.
