A classic tale of the antichrist who comes to Earth in the form of a young boy, Damien Thorn. He's replaced at birth by his father, unbeknownst to his wife, after their biological child dies shortly after birth. As a series of mysterious events and violent deaths occur around the family and Damien enters childhood, they come to learn he is in fact the prophesied Antichrist.

What I loved...
📚 As the blurb indicates, this is the classic antichrist story that typified the horror classics of the late 70s and early 80s. One of my favorite genres, this book delivers on suspense, drama and horror without being overly explicit. Your imagination has to fill in the blanks!

What I didn't love...
📚 While the length of this worked excellently as a movie, the novel felt very short.

📝 Random fact - The novelization of The Omen was written by the screenwriter David Seltzer with some minor changes to details and plot points. While I always thought the book was a completely separate entity, it actually preceded the original movie by just two weeks as a marketing gimmick

This book is so sad. Yes it’s dark, creepy, ominous, heavy, etc, but above all it’s sad and depressing and defeatist. Why do I do this to myself?

Today I learned that the movie came before the book? And that just feels wrong to me…. But apparently the book was released a few weeks before the movie for promotion/marketing???

Regardless, I’m attempting to read some classic horror books to see if they stand up to modern standards/opinions especially given the plot of the story being ingrained in pop culture. Unfortunately, I don’t think this one does…

Don’t get me wrong- I loved the character relationships, and the writing was good I just don’t feel the story itself is engaging enough when you already know all plot beats. The book relies on misdirect and the mystery of who Damon/his parents are but the reader already knows that information going in.

The religious elements were well incorporated however they became repetitive, the deaths and horror elements were well done, the parent-child relationship was excellent and I felt the care and concern the parents had for their child and each other. However I would have loved it if Damons character was developed further, while he is the catalyst of the story he is hardly in the book at all.

I would love to read a modern horror take on the omen because this concept is one of my favourites. with developing themes of nature vs nurture, destiny, sacrifice, good and bad elements of religion. It could be amazing :)

This is so goood. I'm a sucker for a solid antichrist story and this one is a classic for a reason!

Surprisingly a lot better then I thought it was going to be. It adds stuff to the movies story which was nice.
