Thinner

Stephen King, Richard Bachman

3.5 AVERAGE

It was fairly good in parts but some of it seemed to drag out. I’m not sure what other Stephen King books (apart from the Shining) are like, but I wasn’t a fan of the racial slur or the sexualised description of the protagonists daughter near the start.

4 stars. The ending to this is so fucked up and dark and is the reason I’m giving this four stars instead of three. I loved that ending so much. This book was very slow going for me and it took me a bit to really get into it. Once it hit around the 25% mark or so I thought it picked up. The plot is intriguing, and I loved to hate the main character Billy. He’s such scum but he made for a very interesting character and I do think he goes through some pretty good character development by the end. The writing was awesome and atmospheric. Once it got going for me this was a very entertaining and messed up read. I really enjoyed it.

Very dark and smart story that is a study of hatred and injustice. I'm surprised I haven't heard of this one before. Would it ruin the surprise if I said this was written by
Stephen King? King even references himself and his books in this story!
Absolutely grotesque in a precise, masterful way. Love thy neighbor... or else.

Docked some stars because frankly, even though it's a product of its time, I really couldn't stand the way women are characterized in this book. It was published I think in the 70s or 80s, so hardly the pinnacle of feminism gone mainstream/normalized, and you see those regressive views seep unpleasantly into otherwise a fine book. Same for the aggressive fatphobia. The racism, I think, is different, because the novel grapples with it and challenges it directly; but whew, the sexualization of women and cruelty towards the stout & chubby! Non, merci.

A solid, middle road Bachman/King book.

Entertaining, not bad at all but not super stand out either.

my first ever stephen king!!! his writing style took me a minute to get used to but once i got into the story i did enjoy it…. & didn’t see the end coming !

An over weight lawyer hits and kills a woman who jay walked into the street. A man tells him thinner and he finds he is losing weight no matter how much he eats.

I liked the suspense of this story. I liked the incorporation of Gypsies I thought that was interesting.

Thrilling read! My last Stephen King novel was ages (about 7 years) ago, and returning to read another of his novel with Thinner was worth it...
