Entertaining, lighthearted. But if I had not seen the movie I would have been confused often. One of the few times that the movie was better.

I might have a permanent Gaiman bias now, but I loved Stardust. I loved the complex emotions and relationships wrapped in a simple questing plot. I loved the quirky side characters and the beautiful settings and the cloud ships catching their lightning. I loved the happy ending. A wonderful, sparkling little book.

An artfully crafted modern fable, with a very classical story arch. It could go into more depth at times, as some parts are a bit rushed and the ending feels -even for a fairytale- quite on the nose. Nonetheless a nice and smooth read for a cozy afternoon or two.

Before now I had only seen the movie but after listening to the book I honestly enjoyed the book more.

The concept is a lovely fairytale, but there are problems with the storytelling. The introduction is very long, then when things should fold out, we only get brief descriptions of the events. I think the whole book should have been longer and as detailed as the introduction was.
The movie makers made two major changes in the adaptation. The thunder collecting flying pirates part became much longer, more memorable and more important to the story. I think that was a great idea, it gave time for the characters and the romance to show themselves, thus solved my problem with the book.
The other change is the ending. It is less cathartic, less happy in the book and I like it that way.
So great concept, not that great execution but the ending saved it for me.
