Remarkable book. I adored The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as a child, to the point that at one point, I attempted to build a raft. Unsurprisingly, it sank. So, when I heard of this book, James, a retelling of Huck Finn from the perspective of Jim's character, I didn't hesitate. An excellent adult counterpoint to the original.

WOW. A story told from the viewpoint of an enslaved man. A story that symbolises the atrocities of old America and the start of change. A story about the power of language over fear. A story about freedom. A story of Jim becoming James.

✏️

Percival Everett explores themes of identity, resilience, and transformation, emphasising the power of reading, writing, language, and learning. James builds himself using these deeply human and powerful tools in a deeply dehumanising and emasculating environment.
