I'm not giving it 5 ⭐️ only because it doesn't feel like a forever personal favorite BUT as a book, it's a 5 ⭐️ one! Straighforward in a  good way! A perfect example of "less is more", it doesn't try to overdo it or over explain anything. The characters are so well built, and so are their world and surroundings! Their feelings and view of the world, James's especially, were so detailed, allowing to the us along the journey with him, putting ourselves in his shoes for a while.

The pace of the book was perfect and I loved that it had short chapters! It made the read more engaging and the book hard to put down

The story of Huck Finn and “Jim” as
Told by James. This one moved a little slow (hence the 4.5) but the ending was a 5 star ending for me. The story of unending hope and human resilience against all odds: man, nature, and society. This book explores the issues of race and slavery in the south prior to the civil war and abolition.

I will be rereading before I write down any thoughts. I started this and then paused it, wanting to reread The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to get even more context, and then I started other books that captured me.

This was some great, competent writing that was just easy listening (despite some of the dark scenes). I have so many thoughts already about minstrel shows and defiance to performing stereotypes that the book gave James and about how  the code switching feels like a nice nod to how Mark Twain played with accents in his writing of the original story. But I didn't finish the reread of Huck Finn, so I want to finish that and read James again so I can dully appreciate the work Percival Everett did.

Compelling. Dialogue is what powers this novel.
