I liked Murderbot's awkward, quirky vibe, but I struggled a lot with this novella. I think it was partially due to the narrator whose voice didn't work for me (listened to the audiobook). Also, consequently because the characters start out as good friends, who are fundamentally decent people that lack all of that dirty, corrupt corporatissmmm, there was little interpersonal conflict in the story and no real moral dilemmas. Now, you might be like, it's not that kind of story - it's about a quirky robot trying to learn how to fit in with a crew that respects it, and it doesn't HAVE to contain moral dirt, but unfortunately I came in expecting a stranger, weirder, darker story, and this story isn't it. It's a fluffy tale of a team of plucky scientists + one awk robot, and they're kinda cute and twee about it even though the story's plot is about surviving a hostile planet, and nobody dies and nothing is difficult. And that's fine, just not for me.

I love so much, 10/10, no notes, featuring a perfect bean of an MC that just wants to be left alone to watch TV but instead had to protect humans it finds itself reluctantly liking, set against the backdrop of an ominous research mystery and corporate malfeasance. Just a really fun combination of things.

Forgive me, mother, for I have sinned.
I watched half the Apple TV show before starting this book, which resulted in a cute, yet predictable read. I suspect I would’ve appreciated Murderbot more had I not been contaminated by the show. But here we are in this timeline, where I give it 4 stars.

Good quick little intro novella, basically the only interesting character and the one who carries it is the titular murderbot and his commentary.

I wanna say that there wasn’t really a plot, but I think it was just me not caring about what was happening, because I couldn’t really tell you anything that did. Had a few funny lines though tbf
