Just couldn’t get into it. I wasn’t emotionally invested in Rin or her troubles.

Personally, I didn’t like the first book so much as to buy the the second one( Dracon Republic). Usually, I finish the series even If I don’t particularly like them. However, this one is an exception.
The characters didn’t interest me; all of them are entitled assholes or just a bunch of cry babies. The first part of the book is a combination of tropes that are incredibly common. For a moment, I thought I was reading Name of the Wind.
Then, the second thing that threw me off was the sudden shift of the book. From magic school to an all out war. I just felt like it was too sudden and not properly set up.

Yet, I was the most dissapointed by the last 50-100 pages. I couldn’t understand what was driving the characters; why were they doing the things they did. Rin, for example, knowing that those prisoners were incredibly dangerous and would destroy anything in their way, still wanted to release them. Did she not care for the rest of Nikan? We will never know because all we were told is that she believes that asshole Trengsin can control them. Yes, she was going to destroy the world because she loves an immature bastard. Rin herself couldn’t understand what she wanted. Irjah, Jiang were the only bright and interesting character for me.

The book just wasn’t to my liking, but I can understand the ones who liked it. I will, however, stop on the Poppy War here.
