This is an impressive collection of criticism and theory. The essays were all written at the turn of the twentieth century, so I lacked a context for some of the art and cultural moments mentioned. However, I was happy to be introduced  to poets and artists I hadn’t yet heard of.

Though some of the writing went over my head, Alan Gilbert’s critical eye and ability to break down pieces of art to minuscule levels, all while pointing toward the macro impacts of each piece, was impressive and informative.

A comprehensive guide for the potential of art and poetry in the wide expanse of the 21st century—even relevant now nearly 25 years in.
