Carmilla is one of the first vampire novels: the story of Laura, whose father takes in a mysterious girl, and the strange occurrences which follow.
I thought it was interesting to read one of the first vampire novels. It was a little hard to get really into the mystery when you know the plot twist, but it was still a decent read. Weirdly, I found the second half to be more boring than the first half, so I was kind of tired by the end.
I also found that, for female characters written by a man in the 1800s, Laura and Carmilla pretty well done. Obviously, the lesbian-ness of the book is subtle, but there was a decent amount of tension between Laura and Carmilla.

I am so happy to have read this book. I needed something shorter to read after some longer books, and I was intrigued by that fact that this was Dracula’s predecessor. I had no knowledge of that fact or this book until this year.
The story felt surprisingly modern in its writing, and had a genuine eeriness to it. I really enjoyed the story and will highly recommend. I’m happy to add it to my collection of gothic literature.
