This play is so goddamn underrated, it’s unreal. I read this when I was in school, and now rereading it again… the political messages in this are AMAZING

Although written over 50 years ago to satirize the corrupt Italian police force of the 1960s and 70s, this is an absolutely brilliant and timeless piece of literature. Every line, every sight gag, every bit of slapstick humor is symbolic of a much deeper and unyielding message that is every bit as relevant to the political climate of the United States in 2023 as it was to Italy in 1970. And that is precisely what Dario Fo intended. According to the Infallible Source on High (Wikipedia), it has been adapted to fit the context of more than 40 countries, thus illustrating the expansive reach of the narrative. The obvious hypocrisy ever-so-slightly hidden beneath the farce presents itself in society time and time again, which, granted, is a very disheartening reality to face. However, the genius of the play lies in the fact that it dares you to stare hypocrisy dead in the eye and laugh at it. Fo’s rationale, which I find incredibly clever, was that if the audience was cognizant enough to laugh at it, they were at the very least paying attention. And that attention would translate to analytical critique of the modern world. It’s a brilliant piece of satire that I recommend to anyone, regardless of where in the world you are.

Bellissimo!
