Wow, I loved this one. The story begins on a whaling ship and takes what feels like, if not a familiar trope then at least a story whose general direction you know, and then does something completely unexpected with it. Beautiful. CW:

animal harm/death, which is usually a hard no for me, but I think it was worth it in this story
