Crystal Smith Paul's debut reads like a cross between The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and The Vanishing Half. Throughout this dual timeline journey you’ll encounter complexities of racial identity/the color line in the Golden Age of Hollywood, consequences our choices have on future generations, and discussions of when to speak out and when to protect secrets. I really enjoyed it!

3.5/5- I LOVED Kitty’s chapters of the book, but Elise’s fell flat. It felt like an information dump and too much going on in such a small section of the book.

I was a little disappointed in this book. I had seen it around and expected it to be a homerun read, but it never delivered for me. The narrative style nor the dual timeline ever seemed right. I liked the story of Kitty's life for the most part, but the modern day story could have been better. There were also a lot of characters that would pop up and then not really show up again. Plus there were a lot of characters period, which made it hard to keep straight who was who. But, even having these issues, I still enjoyed the book enough to rate it as an average read - which in my eyes is a win.
