It's hard not to be charmed by this engaging historical mystery series opener. Myrtle is a sympathetic, appealing heroine whose capers are funny and entertaining. Her cohorts are just as likable. The mystery at the book's center is twisty, leading to the unveiling of a murderer I didn't start suspecting until near the end of the story. In addition, the descriptions of early crime investigation techniques are interesting. All of these elements combined to create a delightful mystery that I very much enjoyed.

I listened to PREMEDITATED MYRTLE on audio. The narrator, Bethan Rose Young, does an excellent job bringing all the different characters to life. Her performance definitely added to my enjoyment of this book. I'm planning to listen to the next book in the series on audio as well since this listening experienced worked so well for me.

If I could, I'd give this book 4 1/2 stars. Since I can't, I'm rounding up.

Set in Victorian England, Myrtle is a smart 12 year old who is obsessed with toxicology, crime scene analysis, and criminology. ⁣Unfortunately, I found this book a little bit slow and I don’t think any of my kids would enjoy it. I think this was just not my style and other readers will enjoy its format as well as what you can learn about the time period from this book!

Did the world really need another precocious Victorian error early teen female detective series? Probably not. But it never hurts to have them on hand for the voracious readers of the genre. This one is a decent offering if a little overlong. The mystery wasn't that complicated, so there were parts when it dragged in its attempt to meet a page count.

One of our bedtime read alouds. It was a little sophisticated for her but she loved it and certainly enjoyed all the new vocabulary. and it is a delightful whodoneit and great for middle readers.

Myrtle Hardcastle is the inquisitive daughter of a solicitor. She spends much of her time with her governess, Miss Judson. Together they investigate the death of their neighbor which Myrtle is convinced is murder. Myrtle uses her medical knowledge from her late mother and her legal knowledge from her father to ultimately solve the case with a cast of interesting characters that range from a legal aide to a sensation writer.

I adored this book. I couldn't stop reading it. I was especially compelled to continue reading because of how well written the characters were. It's hard not to love Myrtle's determination.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.

Delightful and fun and cozy mystery for people who love tea and studying poison and finding blood in a variety of places. It's more readable than Flavia de Luce for me, and even lacking some depth, I think more kids could get into it. It's kind of more fan service for librarians though, because this child was way precocious af. But I still was here for it.
