I listened to the audiobook. I liked it, but would’ve enjoyed it more without the heavy dose of “I’m not like other girls” the main character had going on.

I have said it before, but when it comes to YA fiction, I prefer the ones that deal with real issues. Those have depth, and meaning.
And in this one we have Reid, a bit of a loner, who feels she is the beta to her bestie. And she is happy like that. But her best friend Hattie goes away every summer for 3 months, and this summer she does not come back.
It was real. Reid sank into a black cloud when she found out Hattie was dead. She went through all emotions, grief, denial, anger. There are flashbacks to their last year, and previous years. The fun they had, and slowly we see more into Hattie, and what happened.
I liked it. It was never actually sad, it was a search, and a celebration of a friendship. And how grief can shatter someone.
I liked the narrator. She put this insecurity into her Reid voice that fitted so well.
A really good audio to listen to

There is so much to say about this book. In no particular order:
- Please be aware that the main character's friend dies by suicide (not a spoiler). This may be hard for some to read. However, it is a beautifully written book that deals with going on after the death of a loved one. Although it specifically deals with the tragic loss of a young life to mental illness and it is sudden, I think that anyone who has lost someone they love can relate. That being said, it can be particularly helpful in understanding that mental illness and suicide are confusing to everyone and that if we (the communal we) learn to talk about it, we may save lives.
- This is a book about teens. Some areas may seem superficial or strange to those of us that have forgotten what was important to us as teenagers, but it is real and well told from a 17-year-old's point of view. Embrace this!
- The imagery is beautiful, especially nature and the sky. Enjoy this. Let the beauty sink in. This book is a slow read, not something to be rushed through. A nice change of pace from so many books, TV shows, and movies.
- Although sad (I cried a few times), it is a book about hope and moving forward.
Disclosure - I won an ARC copy. I was not asked for a review.

This takes the cake, this has to be the most boring and least interesting book I have read in 2020. So much time was spent stalling and so many things overlapped and just made things really messy, the time cuts were frequent and the timeline was kinda wack. Not to mention how the entire plot felt rushed, nothing was planted, if an event ended something new was made to fill in space for that very disappointing but highly built up ending.
