An interesting concept with some elements I liked, but so much of it seemed unearned. We're supposed to believe these people are soulmates, but their connection and chemistry doesn't come across. We're just supposed to believe it because we're told it. And the conflict, which is supposed to seem fraught and impending, seems like an afterthought as it's not really explored. The whole thing, despite it's length, didn't seem well thought out. More big idea without the details.

This was a lovely story. Definitely saw the ending coming from a mile away but I loved the storytelling structure with the dual timeline and all of the Black history infused. 

The only thing that threw me off was the inconsistent head-hopping in the second half. But overall, my favorite book I read this summer!!
