After avoiding fiction for years, mostly because I often find Black love stories portrayed as tragic or full of unnecessary drama, this book was such a refreshing change. The author captured complex circumstances in a truly beautiful way.

The beginning felt a little slow for me, but that may be because I haven’t read fiction in such a long time. Once I settled in, I found it to be a wonderful reintroduction to the genre. Ricki herself is a relatable character, and the love expressed throughout the story is both deep and intense.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a heartfelt and layered love story.

I absolutely loved this book. There were time where it felt like I was right in the middle of a Spike Lee movie which was wild. It reminded me a lot of she’s gotta have it to some reason.

The characters, the connections, the families, all of it pulled me in completely. Toward the end, I could see how things were going to play out, and I wish the ending had been a bit less predictable. That being said I still really enjoyed this read.
