This book was an absolute delight. Great worldbuilding, great story and especially GREAT characters. Jean and Locke are such a great duo. I will pick up the next one pretty soon. 4,75 stars.

I wish this book were only about Locke as a child. The interludes were far more interesting and engaging than the present-day plot. Adult Locke is famed for being a con-artist genius, but all we see from him are reckless mistakes, a failure to observe anything important, and an inexplicable inclination to trust everyone he meets even though he is a professional liar. We only ever see him fail, which makes me question why on earth he has a reputation. I'm not a fan of dark and gritty worldbuilding. There were descriptions and names of places and people that were presented as if they would be exceptionally important to the story but they were rarely referenced again.
