I really didn’t want to begin this review by swearing, but fuck. The author blowed my mind away. The ending note explains so beautifully why the book has certain scenes about reminding oneself of their humanity. I am in awe that the author took such a brave step, by writing stories about queer cops who actually care a lot, unlike the parents he knew. I cannot fathom how much he went through, but really, the first book was a splendid start to something wonderful. I’m so looking forward to read the rest.
criminal minds but make it SO FUCKING QUEER
this was gritty, gory, fun. i loved the main characters, i loved the sexual tension that hasn't fully been explored. and surprisingly, i didn't focus excessively on the relationship when reading! i mean i'm curious to see where the two main characters' relationship goes but the plot was what kept me going.
i think a serial format really does work well here. each episode is essentially a case, kind of like a TV crime show. and this one was twisted and fucked up and not what i expected! truly, i did not guess the perpetrator.
but what's truly fucking awesome
- the author is queer
- the 2 main characters are queer men of color
- there's an implied enby character (uses they/them pronouns)
- the crime dealt with queerness as well and i think the future crimes might too
please read this. i'm beyond excited to read the next books and tell y'all about them but in the meantime, you need this in your life. especially good for pride month in juuuuune :)

I should just give it a five stars. I was hooked instantly. Trying to read in one sitting as if this was an actual TV police procedural episode. I'm hooked. New series. I love that I get exposed to cultures I don't usually see in these roles. This is a slow burn but the partial pay off at the end is worth it. It's been awhile since I've enjoyed a new romantic suspense series so I am settling in with this one.
I read this book as a buddy read and boy did it not disappoint.
It was like a TV crime procedural jumped off the screen and into a book that I struggled to read in parts.
I love Yoon. I know I will learn to love Malcolm the same way but for now Yoon has stolen my affections.
The crimes were gruesome and ultimately very sad but kept you needing to know more before time ran out for another poor soul.
