Given when it was written, 'The Machine Stops' has an odd relevancy in the twenty-first century where one can draw parallels between Forster's machine and addiction to technology. It works well as a short story in spite of its pace, still able to build a dystopia world through the gradual societal decline. I thought the decision to have the point of view centred with the environment of the machine was effective, showing just how consumed humans had become in their technological pursuits.

I just love E M Forster and a few years ago read most of his novels. This short story escaped my attention but I'm so glad I tripped across it now. Considering the time when it was written it's a stunning vision of the future and so close to what is happening now with our reliance of tech - especially with AI dominance round the corner.
