This story was short, but said everything that it wanted to say in that time period. 

It's a much more allegorical view on how technology can divide humanity and deprive of us real connections, and it managed that quite succinctly.

For people who would like a deeper exploration of a similar type of "machine" that  ends up controling human society in an enclosed environment, check Yokohama Station SF by Yuba Isukari.

What makes it haunting is how easily it mirrors today: ecstasy at the press of a button, revulsion at real human contact, and the quiet surrender of thinking for ourselves.

We only exist as the blood corpuscles that course through its arteries, and if it could work without us, it would let us die.

But in the ruins, Forster leaves us with something sacred: presence. The final moment; bloody, real, human, isn’t salvation. It’s proof that something true can survive even a world built to erase it.

This book doesn’t entertain.
It unmasks.

A timely novel about how a rise in technology leads to depleting human contact.

This may have to be a re-reading in the future as I found the narration to be bland, unengaging and hard to focus on.

Beautifully written and alarmingly precient considering its age. A perfect short story and one that shows us that the existential questions that drive us haven't changed much in 115 years.
