Emily Wilde is back with her journaling and this time she's off to Austria with her partner Wendell in search of a mysterious fairy door, as well as the aim to uncover the disappearance of another female scholar years earlier who was also in search of the door to the fairy otherlands.
This was just as much fun and full of adventure and whimsy as the first book. I love this historical fantasy world of fairy scholar set within our own world of reason, and how Heather Fawcett has slotted in the world and magic of fairy as well as the study of them so easily into our reality. I loved the new characters in this that made up the posse of scholars descending on an Austrian village from Emily's niece Ariade as well as her colleague Dr Rose whom she has never got along with (I was afraid he would be the 'goes along and takes all credit for himself' but thankfully this was not the case). One of the things I did miss was the village aspect as I feel we got to know the characters of the village in the first book a lot better than in this one.
I love Emily and Wendell's relationship and the progression in this book felt so natural and lovely, and we see Emily step in as Wendell's saviour mirroring the first book when it was Wendell doing so for Emily. I'm looking forward to the third and final book to see how it all ends for these two.
