Another lovely foray into Fairie. What I enjoy most about these books is the worldbuilding - it's inventive and refreshing. I also appreciate the gentle skewering of academia.

Plot
1910, St. Liesl - In this sequel, Emily and Wendell travel to the alps find a back door to a specific Faerie realm. Before their adventure even starts, assassins are after Wendell- so they are all in a bit of race. Alongside Shadow, Emily’s assistant and niece Ariadne, and the Cambridge dept. head Dr. Farris Rose, our group of scholars venture upon missing professors, eerie folk, and a new village as they try to find their door.
POV
First person Emily as journal entries
Writing Style and Thoughts
I LOVED THIS! Because we were already introduced to this world in book 1, this book took off in a race. The pacing was fantastic, fast paced without losing any character developments. We have high stakes as they are all in imminent danger. The folk seem scarier in this one, and as the Faerie world opens up, so does the magic and its sinister capabilities.
I loved Emily’s character arc in this one as she grows warmer towards not just strangers, but someone from her family who shares the same interests. As a person who also can come off standoffish myself, all business and no play, I like how well rounded Emily is. I love Wendell as her foil and he’s a great character, too, but Emily really shined in this one - in her wits and bravery.
This installment was so good, I want to read the next one right away, but it’s currently only available as an e-book and I have to work instead T_T.
Narrators
Ell Potter was a fantastic narrator. Her tone and sound was great for Emily’s reserved but kind personality. I loved that it stuck to the idea that these were all of her journal entries, so she limited the range of voices - which I think really worked for Emily’s point of view. Her cadence and flow was really great, and kept me super engaged with this faster pace story. Bonus points that her accent was clear even at 1.75 speed, which I would replay chapters when I would get distracted (my fault, entirely).
We also have a chapter with Michael Dodds and he plays a fantastic Wendell. So much charm and regality in his voice with the perfect amount of trickery.

It’s been a couple of days since I read it, and I haven’t been able to write anything.
The first part was kind of boring for me, and I wasn’t a fan of the FMC character (but that’s just my personal take)
So, I wanted that same kind of atmosphere again and gave the 2 part a second chance. The plot was a lot more interesting this time, and the main character didn’t annoy me as much.
