This was a great read. A troubled narrator, an interesting and unique premise, an exciting and tense predicament. The pacing was handled very well, even when Richard, the protagonist, wasn't sure how much time had passed. There was plenty of action and entertaining dialogue to keep the story moving.

There were a couple of instances of intense violence that had me reading through the gaps between my fingers, so effective were the descriptions. It was in keeping with the tone of the book.

The narrator's voice was fantastic, too. Whether he was describing his unique family heritage, or the brief comedic interludes that stopped the story becoming too heavy, I felt Bradley done an excellent job, especially for a debut novel. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention the ending. Without spoiling it, the direction he takes the story after the climax, the humanity he injects his characters with, is just so very well done. We see the aftermath of all the violence and horror that came before, and it makes for a powerful ending. An excellent read and a wonderful debut.
