At this point, I've decided "OMG YOU'LL NEVER SEE THE PLOT TWIST COMING IT'S CRAAAZY" is a red flag.
Because I almost never see them coming. But that's because they are straight up poopoo doodoo nonsense.

It comes off as right wing progoganda. The author wrote the parents as caricatures of modern day liberals and
making “Teddy” a girl in the end
sealed it.

It became anti-trans and had republican rhetoric in it.

Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak offers an intriguing premise with its blend of psychological thriller and paranormal mystery, enhanced by the eerie inclusion of child-drawn illustrations. The story is largely enjoyable, with fast pacing and a gripping mystery, but it falters due to predictable plot twists, underdeveloped characters, and the inclusion of right-wing tropes that seem to demonize liberals and outsiders. These heavy-handed, binary moral themes feel outdated and detract from the overall narrative. While Mallory’s recovery arc adds emotional weight, it’s treated with a moralistic tone that lacks nuance. Despite its strengths, the novel ultimately leaves little for readers seeking depth or balance.

I really liked it!! I wasnt expecting the ending at all but I was expecting more tbh. As much hype as it got, but overall still a good book. I would definitely recommend  to someone who doesnt read tons of thrillers

the premise was quite interesting, it reminded me of a short horror story i read a few years ago, but the plot-twist was so bad, it left me feeling quite upset. i don't think the transphobic comments were needed at all - they do not serve any purpose in the story and there was no critique of what was being said.
saying the child was 'brainwashed' and 'forced to transition' creates a dangerous narrative: the gender identity of the kid is questioned for fun and it becomes a final plot-twist to explain the poor structure of the novel. using this rhetoric can be extremely dangerous and harmful because there are real trans kids in our world who deserve to be loved and accepted by everyone around them.
i wonder what message this book was trying to send all along.. a waste of time, i wouldn't recommend reading this.
