It was very slow and tedious and the characters were hard to relate to. However, it did have some good action at the end.

there is no fucking way Iblees is responsible for all of this. nobody can convince me the traitorous two faced bitch isn't Hazan. Think about it. He's friends with Kamran and basically a friend to Alizeh because he's serving her, but he doesn't tell Alizeh what she wants to know when she needs to know and refuses to communicate to Kamran about why he acts like he's holding a secret from him. He's dissatisfying both of the main characters, and in Iblees' poem he says " Two have a friend who is foe to all". Two people!! have the same friend!! who do they both have in common? Hazan! The devil didn't even visit Kamran once or talk to him at all, while Alizeh gets a visit from him once a month, so it can't be him. and in the poem Iblees also says "Always the jester will interfere, for there cannot be three sovereigns here." Imho the jester symbolises the man who is subject to service of the royal, aka Kamran and Alizeh. He is serving Alizeh to help her escape and he is serving Kamran as his minister. He was trying to get Alizeh out of the castle to escape, but didn't even tell her what she needed to know. Hazan walked off with Kamran before Alizeh could get Hazan alone after he discovered her and Kamran together and alone. bam. It's Hazan, not Iblees. I will not believe any other opinions respectfully.

While the pacing if this book is slow  it is so incredibly imersive you don't realise it. You're so wrapped up in the characters and their intense emotions you want every scene to last just a little longer!

This took me much longer to read than I thought, but I have the flu to blame for that. I literally went a week without reading.

Anyway, this is arguably the best book I have ever read. The prose in this book was unlike any other. Like, damn, since when were we so formal.

Love, love, love Alizeh. She was such an amazing main character and, I can’t lie, her plan of staying low as a snoda servant is smart because who is going to think a servant can take down five grown men trying to ambush her?????? I definitely didn’t. Also, I just know she’s so fine.
When Kamran broke into her room and she held a blade to his neck, wearing nothing but a corset 🫣.

BRO, KAMRAN. I NEED ME A MAN LIKE HIM. I need me a man that’ll fetch me the moon because he hates to see me cry 😪. Never has a character radiated BDE like Kamran does. I had to take breaks when reading the scenes between him and Alizeh because they would literally make me blush so much. It’s so bad

THE ENDING?????? Kamran please save my girl Alizeh from the shackles of Cyrus. I can’t believe he just appeared out of nowhere and basically kidnapped her so they could get married. KAMRAN HELP.

I don’t think I can wait until February next year for the second book. Tahereh Mafi can’t just end the book like that and expect me to be okay??????? I NEED ANSWERS.

This book was outstanding. Certainly one of the most beautifully written fantasy novels I've ever read, and the story was incredibly compelling. I loved Alizeh's resiliency and her ability to see the beauty in life despite her heartbreaking past (and present).

I've read several series that included Jinns but always from a villain perspective. This book is the singular exception. The tie-in with other aspects of Persian mythology was fascinating and I cannot wait to continue reading more of this series!
