this book was so fucking cute oh my god. it was very whimsical and fun and i loved the characters. the plot was a bit complex for a middle grade, and the protagonists were a lot more morally grey for most of the book than ive seen from a middle grade before,  which was fine ofc but not really what i expected. i dont really read middle grade at all so this was a fun change. its not a 5 star bc there was a Lot of heteronormativity and i think howl and sophie got together at the end (i honestly didnt even realize thats what happened till i looked at the wiki tho lmao) even tho she's 17/18 and he's in his late 20s?? i literally have no idea but think theyre married in the next book so. were just gonna ignore that second book. but overall very easy and fun read i recommend lmao.
also a bit off topic but i think its so funny that in an interview at the end of my copy the author expressed confusion that so many girls who read the book are in love with howl like babe,,,,,,,, a male protagonist with an interest in "feminine" things?? and not explicitly a villian?? esp in the 80s?? mans hot idk what to tell u
