Huh. My feelings for this novel are as vague and shapeless as they were when I started it, but I can't say I didn't enjoy it - because I did, quite a lot. The writing is superb and sharp and the characters are enthralling even when they are terrible people. I already have the sequel from the library but I think I'll take a breather between books to read something 'lighter'; Millet seems to have that effect on me.

The best part was the first chapter - everything that followed was disappointing. Characters were not believable.

This might be my favorite Millet book. I love the way the beginning makes you believe you are witnessing the origin of one of the great Terrors of Capitalism, and though that's not necessarily wrong, it takes many turns from there the way a life does.

Turns out he is so good with money that he bores himself. So what else, what else? Animals.

Stiff prose that made the protagonist unbelievable. Worth reading for the cover photo.

This book was generally very slow-paced and pensive, but I personally feel like the ending made it worth it. Everything came together in such a nice, reflective and poignant way, and when I was reading the last few paragraphs I felt like I finally understood the entire point.
