Someone is injuring or killing race car drivers by sabotaging their race cars. Samantha Kelleher is a mechanic for the NASCAR racing team owned by her father and a prime suspect for being the saboteur, Drew Thompson is an undercover cop for the California state police assigned to find the killer.
The writing is as fast paced as a race car on a track. The setting unique, the plot somewhat believable, and Drew is a very likable character though Sam is not. The secondary characters aren’t fully formed, even Jade who has been assigned to be Drew’s partner in their search for the killer before he/she kills again, is somewhat nebulous and takes a secondary role to Drew.
There are some real issues in the book. Blake never clearly explains how Drew gained her experience as a race car driver – it’s not likely she could walk into the garage with no experience and be able to drive in a competition that has her driving at 100 mph. Then, nearly two-thirds of the way through the book it dawns on Drew that Sam will hate her when it comes out that she’s an undercover cop who believes Sam is the saboteur nor did Blake address the issues Sam may have had when the previously straight Sam is seduced by Drew. Then, there’s Drew and Sam dancing at the sponsors’ function which took me out of the story considering no one at the male-dominated event took issue with the women. Fairly early in the book, Blake signals who the saboteur is and the reader is left waiting for it to dawn on the characters.
NASCAR fans may very well enjoy this book far more than a non-race aficionado. But if you’re looking a book with a non-traditional setting this could be the book for you.

A mechanic burned by her past and an undercover cop determined to find her suspect in a series of accident which might be mechanically caused meet in Racing Hearts by Dena Blake.
Welcome to the racing world where nothing is as it seems not even the main characters themselves. Blake gives us a mystery romance where everyone is suspect to include family members and then throws in explosive fireworks between Sam and Drew, our suspicious mechanic and our intrepid detective respectively. Each chapter finds a twist in the story and you shaking your head. The characters are well-written and drawn out and the mystery closes with satisfaction. There is some sex to satisfy our romantic hearts just enough to keep us racing around the track for more as we flip the pages.
