I wasn't a big fan of this book. Although the FairyLoot editon is stunning (cover with red foil, stencilled edges and illustrated end pages), I wasn't able to get much into the story.

With a circus vibe, our protagonist Ava knows of the existence of vampires. One night she finds herself in a mysterious place with a magician show. But it's not all a trick. Magic is real and Ava possesses it. The magician troupe needs her, and hoping to get news about her mother's death by a vampire, she follows them to a manor where she needs to compete to gain immortality. But something sinister hides behind the competition, and Ava's past and true identity will come knocking down.

The story is original as I can't remember ever reading about magicians as the main characters in a YA novel, and the vampires backstory was too. However, I felt like the ending was too easy in a sense. I was expecting something more.

I really liked the setting of the book, but the story didn't really convince me. It's a bit chaotic, and the games are a little bit forced into the vampire plot, in my opinion.
I liked the main character at the beginning, but then I have the feeling that she constantly contradicts herself, going from not wanting to trust anyone all the time to being the most trustworthy and innocent person who is fooled by everyone in a matter of seconds.
I found it a bit bloody for a YA. Still, it's a well-written book, I especially liked the magic system and the setting.

This book surprised me, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. It’s YA which I though would mean it would be predictable and shallow but I thought the characters were pretty well worked out and the overall storyline was interesting and combined some of my favorite elements of these coming of age stories.
