I feel... unimpressed. I didn't have high hopes or anything, but I did still think I would really enjoy it. While the idea for this comic series is really interesting I was mostly bored while reading it and so I really don't think I'll be continuing this series.

**Note: A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**

Holy crapbuckets this was enjoyable. So enjoyable that when I finished it, I sent a text to a friend that just said "Fuck. I finished it. Nooooooooooooooo."

Sex Criminals is about two adorkable yet sarcastic lovebirds who realize they both have the power to freeze time when they orgasm... and then decide to use that power to go on a Robin-Hood-esque crime spree. And it's all kinds of great.

Among it's many positive attributes, this book has funny, frank, and oh-so-awkward-at-times portrayals of sex and sexual discovery; a cute romance between to charismatic characters; and even a freaking overwhelming love of libraries and librarians thrown in too.

Also, defiant pooping, a villainess who does kegels, and lots of other wacky shit.

It's charming. It's interesting. It's delightfully bent. I want more right now.

Some Favorite Quotes:
"I'm gonna go back to sleeping with boring, normal girls who don't freeze time when they fuck and laugh at my dick afterwards."
"But it glows! Totally justifiable circumstance!"

"So here's a weird idea..."
"Is it butt stuff?"
"What? No. Why, are you into--No it's not butt stuff."

I adored this! It's charming and tender and warm and compelling, with fantastic dialogue and asides and cleverness, and the art is gorgeous, and it touches so winningly on the pitfalls of sex education and how isolated we are in our bodies sometimes, and I just love it completely for its honesty and its humour and staggered wacky pacing. Just wonderful.

Meet Suzie & Jon, two perfectly ordinary people who freeze time when they have sex & rob banks to save their failing local library. Wait, what?

No, seriously--she's a fun, literate girl who works at the library & is trying to keep it from closing. He's a curious, quick-witted guy who hates working at the bank that's foreclosing on Suzie's branch. They meet at a party, find out that they are crazy-compatible & bizarro hijinks ensue. Reader beware, if you are not into sexually explicit stuff, you won't make it past the first few pages--not because of any terrible depictions, but because the frank, intelligent approaches to sexuality in this series are not going to go away.

With that said, Suzie & Jon are people with flaws, jobs, dysfunctions, & weird senses of humor like the rest of us. This volume follows their budding relationship & fills in their backstories, giving us a good idea of who we're hanging out with here. There were lots of satisfying story moments that had me rooting for these two: their first meeting where they bond over Lolita, Suzie's epic rock-out in a pool hall to Queen's Fat Bottomed Girls, even their texts to one another are charming. While the main premise of the series hinges on the wonderful & weird sex, there's an equal focus on relationships & how amazing it feels to click with someone.

I also love how Zdarsky draws faces, how each is distinctly memorable but somehow relatable, as if I could meet people like them in everyday life. The background visuals are fun to linger over & are especially key in a world where people can walk through a time-frozen reality. Expressive, yet still silly, Sex Criminals is an offbeat series with a lot of heart.

Got introduced to this series by a group of booklovers and I'm hooked!

The premise is sexy and hilarious, how could I resist! I mean, the whole idea of stopping time and robbing a bank is interesting enough, but the way they get time to stop is the cherry on top!

What I loved most about it though, are the backstories of how Suzie and Jon discovered their gifts. It really isn't just about stopping time, it's about discovering their bodies as adolescents growing up, and not having anyone to talk to about it. That is so relatable, even in our modern times now. We are slowly getting more open with talking about sex and other "taboo" topics, but we still have a ways to go. I love that this series is contributing to the discussion.

Great concept, but I just couldn’t really get into the storyline. To me it felt like the comic was built around the premise rather than the plot, which was rather weak.

This is my current favorite graphic novel recommendation right now. A delightful and different story!

A lot of fun. Great humour, healthy(ish) approach to and portrayal of sex. Particularly liked the background gags and jokes (some had me laughing for longer than is probably normal - including some delayed revisiting's). Will be very interesting to see where the story goes.
