Picked up this book not knowing how huge it was (both in size and in popularity) that they made a movie. All the more I was intrigued to read it. If you love a book carried by dialogue this is for you. I devoured this book. As a woman living in New York I feel that pressure to be something or other everyone is trying but you see only the special few make it. It’s an empowering book to see stubborn women paving the way for themselves but of course it comes at a price. Nobody’s likable but you root for them anyways to have a revelation and change. A book I’d like to have a copy of and let everyone I know read

The book was slow to start as Anne isn't the most interesting character to follow around. But I raced to the finish as it became a telenovela. If you want to read about career women who get punished for every bad decision they make, and men who do the bare minimum facing no consequences and getting rewarded for it.

this book is going to haunt me, i know it. parts of the book are tough to swallow (esp the fatphobia/body shaming, ableism, and homophobia) but if you can power through, it’s so worth it. idk if this is a hot take but i think it has a similar message to the barbie movie but it does it better

It's a slow start but if you really like Old Hollywood (before the collapse of the studio system, so like 1940s-60s) once you start it's REALLY difficult to put it down.

There are a lot of seriously triggering topics covered in this book and it's not really something that can easily be skipped over. It's also a combination of the characters' internalized feelings and the result of the time and place the book was written.

This book is dark and like bojack horseman for girls that enjoy drama and misery. While this book isn't happy, I genuinely enjoyed finding out how much worse the characters could get.

TW for pill addiction, suicide

This was pretty progressive for a novel written in the 60s. With the emergence of women's lib, women wrestled for control of their lives. Yes, there's cattiness and drama, but also important themes.

Helen was the most feminist leaning. She works hard to afford the life of luxury she wants, and she isn't afraid to be forthcoming about wanting men for sex. And of course, everyone labeled her as "difficult."

Anne started out firm, but became a doormat for Lyon. For why. What did he bring to her life. Girl stand up!

Jennifer's is perhaps the most tragic. There's a scene in which she is sexually assaulted while on the phone with Anne. Though, in the 60s, it wouldn't have been seen that way. She later has an abortion bc her husband has a mental illness that can be passed on genetically. She also discovers she has polyps on her ovaries, and a malignant tumor on her breast. She commits suicide. All important issues for a novel in the 60s, although a lot for 1 character.

Neely struggles with addiction, overdosing, and spends time in rehab.

I'm glad I read this, but if I ever read the trigger warnings I would've left it alone. There's an enormous amount of diet talk, specific weights (some of which were a bit too real for me), ED behaviour and so on. Not to mention the fatphobia and dehumanisation of women. 
That being said, it's 4 stars because it was somehow so entertaining. I just couldn't put it down. It was like a time capsule and I love that in a book, especially when it's set in the US in the middle of the 20th century. Makes me want to read more Truman Capote books. I liked the characterisations, even though the characters themselves were mostly horrible.
