While this book seems tame to today's crowd, I can see why for it's time it would have been extremely racy! I really enjoyed this book, they way it was written, and all of the characters. A good read all around!

Oh my god. I absolutely ADORED this book.
I hate long books, I find them pointless, redundant, hard to get it into. It’s just awful for me but THIS ONE?!? ugh I didn’t want it to end at one point. I saw “five minutes of the book left” and I almost cried of sadness. This was the perfect book for me right now. The way you actually feel in that era, nothing feels out of place, even the old ways dont even shock you cause you’re too into their world.
All that talking about love, the despair, the passion, the longing. I feel this book is something you MUST read in your 20s. Fits perfectly with every single realization you might thought about friendship, relationships, business, future, it was amazing.
I was kind of sick of Anne at the beginning just getting her way without actually doing anything, just natural carisma and beauty but when Neely was saying how sick she was of giving and seeing people like Anne just going through life getting everything they want I got it. There are a bunch of people like Anne in this world and that doesn’t make them any less deserving of the things they have, its just an unfair maze of cards dealt for the ones who cant manage to live like that.
I didnt like Neely from the beginning. She was loud, annoying, stupid and even her sad background didn’t sit right with me and I was so happy at the end to finally see her manipulative ways get into her own happiness. Cause I do believe some people have to be left alone no matter what they do to you, cause they will ruin things for themselves either way, so why bother?
I loved Jennifer, even if she was selfish and whatnot. She knew her cards and knew how to play them without being a fuckin bitch about it. I saw her as a good middle ground between Anne and Neely. Pretty enough to get through life easier but talentless enough to be grateful for the opportunities she was handled.
I think all the women presented are very good portraits of the way women move through this world and even if it was personally bittersweet to saw my own ugly face in some tactics, it was refreshing to see them moving so naturally through that dramatic scene. Absolutely enjoyed this whole ride!

I’m actually hurt. There is no reason to why this book was so GOOD! I cannot explain…but alas I will.
Jennifer: her story breaks my heart because she always had the purist intentions and really only lived for everybody else. She wanted ONE thing and that was to be loved for who she was and not what she had to offer and goddamn if she never got it. Righteously, she took herself out before she could be further let down by actually every man ever.
Neely; you really had me in the first half girl…I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU. You love her until you hate her and that is exactly why she will never be happy. The juxtaposition between her and Hellen Lawson, OH GOD! (anyway I hate her forever)
Anne; my dear sweet Anne. The people’s princess. She knew what she wanted in life and didn’t stop until she got it. The only issue is, when she got it, it screwed her best friend and left her to turn to pills (dolls). A self made, well mannered, woman of all women. Helped her friends and the people she cared about with such fervor and yet she was always shafted in the end. (I will love you forever)
*Lyon Burke rot in hell.

The rise and fall of the American Dream has rarely been as perfectly portrayed as is shown in this book. I cried on a train over it and you would too.

2020: I DNFed this one, but I watched the movie and did a lot of reading about what went into the book and the movie during the time of its writing. I just couldn't reconcile the characters to the time and setting of the book and was confused the whole time I was reading. I was hoping it would be more Bell Jar-esque but I just don't know enough about the Hollywood scene during this time frame to get into it. I don't think this is the last time I'll give this book a try, but I'm ready to move on for now.

"but i don't love him, mama."
"no man can be loved."
poorly written, whack pacing, and confusing transitions but also has some of the best one-liners
