It's always hard to review one of these career-spanning collections, since few poets write in the same vein over their whole careers. I like some of the versions of David Lehman presented here more than others, but all were worth reading. Although the format of his poems has changed over time, one thing that has stayed constant is his conversational style. One always has the feeling that he's settled into a comfortable chair next to you and has started to tell you about his day in interesting fashion. This makes him sound something like Billy Collins, and they certainly do share similarities, but while Collins is always trying to distract you from seeing his inner self too deeply, Lehman seems much more comfortable with letting himself be known, and that makes him seem like someone that you would like to know in real life.
