Not great literature, but still lots of fun. Loved it on audio!

Reminds me why "Taming of the Shrew" is not one of my favorite Shakespeare plays. These characters in the novel and archly archetypical, which makes them rather annoying, which in turn makes it difficult to empathize with their motivations and actions. Quick read though.

La fin est nulle par contre. Et je sais que c'est une réécriture mais l'histoire méritait d'être moins bâclée.

Meh. This was all right, certainly nothing special or memorable and definitely below my expectations for Anne Tyler, whose books I usually love. It's a retelling of Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew," which I'll admit to not being very familiar with. (I've never seen "Kiss Me Kate" either, which I really should, right?) This book is a part of a broader project to rewrite Shakespeare plays by contemporary authors (Margaret Atwood, Gillian Flynn, Tracey Chevalier). I'm not opposed to Shakespeare reinterpretations, and might even look at others in this collection (especially Macbeth and Hamlet)... but this particular book was short-and-sweet and just didn't thrill me. Kate was not entirely unlikable and her situation with her father and Pytor was not completely unbelievable, but that's faint praise indeed.

I re-read this when I can't focus on a new book. I love the character, Kate as our shrew is so lonely and powerless. And this big change happened and gives her community and agency. There's some off commentary about men not being able to be emotional that I have to wade through a little bit and I wish I could see more of the life they've made together with all their bickering and squabbling but it's such a lovely read.
