This was a 3.5 star book for me. The book is beautifully written and gives a view of life in Haiti that was new to me. (As I have never read a book set in Haiti).

As stated I loved the writing. Danticat uses a lot of subtle symbolism which worked very well in the story. She paints a good picture of the Haitian village and village life. The contrast between the rich and poor was very well done as well as demonstrating the pros and cons of a small village.

The characters were interesting and all had a story which helped tie the overall story together. A couple of characters had stories that were difficult to understand the motivation behind them. So I felt like I was missing a piece.

To me the ending was too abrupt for me. I didn't need all the stories all tied up but wanted a couple of things explained to me. Maybe that was Danticat's intent to make the reader come up with their own motivations and outcomes.

Very nice writing, but the story line was too disjointed. It looks at too many different members of the community without focusing enough on the main character, Claire. At first I was very drawn into each new character and story, but then as each was dropped for yet another character, I lost interest.
