A fantastical fable set in the early days of England's entry into the "New World." Full of romance, passion, vengeance, hypocrisy, revelation, and maybe even redemption...

Slow paced, very descriptive book. I appreciated the mistery of the plot and the misticism that the characters are surrounded by, that fits very well with the religious colonial society and the importance that they give it. I found pear’l character the most interesting and likeable. However I found the descriptions too long and tiring and the pace to be too slow for me. As a result, I took a very long time to finish this book.

I really liked the meat and potatoes of the story, but the book itself was far too wordy. The story could easily have been told in 3 or 4 chapters.

I firmly believe this should have been a short story. (Opinion from a suffering high school me)

An intriguing story about how pre-United States Puritanism ruled New England and the moral compass of colonist settlers. You can see how the rage of a high demand religion and god drove these people to call out and punish sin publicly, and how that led easily to events like the Salem Witch Trials, the religious upheavals of the 19th century, and even now to the righteous indignation of radical conservatives in the US. And yet, it also reveals how the human desire for community, love, and forgiveness often seem to reign supreme in the end, despite any pain and humiliation enacted along the way.
