This book was recommended to me by a close friend who didn’t remember much of the plot, but said she enjoyed it. It mainly details the struggles and experiences of young women growing up in the eighties in England. The story can be difficult to follow at times and there are a lot of questions that are left unanswered.

The ending was somewhat interesting and something unexpected, but I wouldn’t say it would be enough for me to recommend to another person. Might be enjoyable for other readers, but it was not for me.

The main character Mona who is fifteen and experiencing all the troubles associated with that age. She enjoys gambling, drinking, and committing crimes. Mona is exploring her sexuality by entering a relationship with Tamsin, who is going through similar experiences. The don’t realize the consequences of their actions and that was the main takeaway from the book for me.

They're all terrible people and I love it.

I found this darkly funny, with enough slightly unpredictable and perhaps far-fetched happenings to keep it interesting but grounded. Its Northern setting and style kept it real. I like how it really downplayed the sexual side of the two main characters' relationship rather than basing the whole book around it. However, the ending - while it left enough unanswered questions to make you think - seemed a little rushed.

Definitely one of my favorite books. I saw the movie before I read the book and I honestly enjoy both. I feel like I overdose on girls every time I read it. I love the twist in the story; I didn't see it coming.

Slightly reminiscent of The Virgin Suicides & Mean Girls; if they were combined. However, the ending wasn't great.

One of the best books I have read that truly show what it's like to be an unhinged 15/16 year-old girl. Not sure if I love it or hate it.
