As both a daughter who has lost a parent and a mother who will one day have to leave her children, this book completely devastated me. I had to stop every few pages to cry. This is an incredible story about grief and how isolating it can be. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to read something so honest and heartbreaking.

I have a headache from all the tears that just leaked out of my eyes after reading this. This was an absolutely gripping tale, almost painfully so. I’m glad I spaced out my reading of this to two days because it would have been too overwhelming otherwise.

A Monster Calls is a modern fairytale that is grim and dark and beautiful. This book contains words that I’ll carry with me for a very long time to come and I foresee myself coming back to this tale in moments of grief. I feel heavy now, just after reading this but I feel free too. This was an excellent read.

Could not believe how hard I cried during this! I mean I watched the film years back but hell this truly ripped my heart out...got me calling my mom.

This was a really good book.
It was written so well; so simple and elegantly.
It stirs up so many emotions, so much sadness.
It was such a short and easy read, and it really teaches you so much.
Everyone should read this.

Got it on audiobook to listen with the kids in the car -- tears streaming down my face made it clear that I could not listen and drive, so finished it in combination of audio and hard copy when I got home. It is a beautiful and surprising book about loss that only disappointed me once (thus the 4 vs. 5 stars.)
