This is a nice addition to the urban faery genre, though I thought it was kind of cheesy. It has a relatively satisfying story, with romance and adventure, though the setting of the story is pretty static. It's good to grab off the library shelves but I'm not so sure about buying it.
It was fine. I listened to it on cd and I think that made it better.
I really liked this book. It had a slow start, but picked up around 100 pages in and had a really strong finish. It also had a love triangle that was handled awesomely.
Ash is a very dynamic character who goes after what she wants, even if the odds are against her and she doesn't give up. It was really great to see. There are many characters in this story and we get to see them try and confront what the hell is going on in their lives now and all work for what they want in different and conflicting ways. I'm definitely going to continue with the series.

I love that even though Ash embraced her fated role as the Summer Queen, she didn't let that dissuade her from being with Seth or getting what she wants. She embraced the role of Summer Queen as a job and told Keenan, who assumed they would live happily ever after, that she knows she's in a position of power and was going to use it to her advantage and be with who she knows and loves but wants to be friends.Ash is a very dynamic character who goes after what she wants, even if the odds are against her and she doesn't give up. I actually loved this! Usually in YA paranormal books the girls in love with a mortal and then after she's introduced to an immortal or some other being that isn't human, she leaves him when they just meet. This didn't happen. I'm not saying she'll stay with her mortal, because that would be stupid and impractical of her, or not matter eventually because let's face it girl, he gonna die. But still, she stands her ground in a non stubborn way, and makes her own choices, not swayed by the glamours and riches of another world. Granted, it's not technically new as she grew up seeing it, but it's new in terms of interaction and even knowledge as she had no clue about the Summer Kings identity and his ... Let's call it curse. Basically his mother, the evil winter bitch... I mean, winter queen, killed his father when she was with child... I think? Anyway, he was the summer king and by the sounds of it did the right and just thing and separated the seasons like a good fae king should.
That's not how the Ice Hag decided to play however and took all the power for herself, and made a deal with some other dude, another Court, that her own son would be cursed to find his queen, therefore taking nearly all his power, making him weak and not able to control his people.... For centuries. Seriously, total hag. Anyway, basically he had to continuously 'court' women as he likes to put it and they had a choice, become what I'd like to call a Summer Whore, and what he'd like to call 'a summer girl' by choosing not to be queen or take the plunge and touch the winter staff I guess it is, and there's two outcomes to that, turn into the winter girl, destined to be immortal and watch the guy you love - clearly or you wouldn't touch the staff- date other girls for as long as it takes for the next girl to touch the staff. So like, 1000 girls could deny it, and you'd be stuck there watching and waiting. BOO!
The other outcome however is that you'll touch it and you'll be the summer queen and make him strong and stuff. Which is slim chances really, as there's only one....
If you chose to ignore him after he's chosen you? You turn into some black ghosty spirt that's... creepy. And nobody wants that.
Your last option to back down, taken only by one person ever, is death. Which, coincidently is Ash's mother. Either way, Ash is a boss ass bitch, who does whatever she wants. She's the first person in Keenan's life to put her foot down, make demands and not cower in fear of his reaction. She's like a slice of sunshine in his rainy existence... Literally.

This is a nice little young adult fantasy faerie book.
This book follows Ash, a woman who has always been able to see faeries but has a strict set of rules when it comes to them. Unfortunately, a brush with the Summer King forces her to break these rules, because he just won’t leave her alone.
Ash is okay as a character, but she’s a bit flat, being held up only by her interesting backstory. The whole plot resolves around a will-they-wont-they with previously mentioned Summer King, who after waltzing into her school, just won’t leave her alone. Neither of them are unlikeable, but I'm not sure I really like them either. I did like Seth, even if his ‘bad boy’ nature was a tad contrived.
It’s the world building in this that I really like. I like the premise of these dark and scary faeries and there is so much depth to the whole narrative that this really drew me in and made me want to learn more.
Overall, its not terrible. The writing is really good, even if the characters aren’t brilliant. I liked it as an introduction to the world and enjoyed reading it.
