I must say that I have never really been a huge fan of fairies but I wanted to step out of the box and read about them anyway. Wicked Lovey was a great choice. The mythology around the fairies is well developed and explained. One of my favorite things about fiction creatures is how the author is able to make the creatures their own, it’s like learning about a new culture!
In Wicked Lovely the fray have a cast system with the court fray being at towards the top. Keenan is the Summer King searching for his Queen in order to stop his mother’s malevolent reign. His mother Beria, the Winter Queen, has bound Keenan’s full powers and killed his father slowing ending summer in the world until such time the new Summer Queen is found.
After decades of searching for girls to become the Summer Queen; and the girls refusing or failing the test and becoming a winter girl like Donia. Keenan is sure that Aislinn is the one he has been searching for but she is even more special than he knows.
Aislinn can see fairies, like her mother and her grandmother before her. Aislinn has seen what fairies are like and knows what they are capable of and is sure of one thing, that she can never trust them. There is also Seth, Aislinn’s very best friend who will do anything for her.
Although I still don’t care for fairies, I enjoyed reading Wicked Lovely and I think I will continue with the series. I had to read it slow to keep up with all of the fairy background but it’s so well written that it was enjoyable to try and understand the fray world and Aislinn’s view of them.
Aislinn is going my list of favorite protagonist! She is so strong and even fierce when she needs to be. She’s not a girly teenager that fails for the first pretty thing that bats his eyes at her, which makes her a challenge. I love how she stands up for what she thinks is right throughout the whole book, never caving-in to what others feel is best for her.
Seth is amazing! He’s the guy of our dreams without being stereotypical. He is my new book crush!
Keenan was probably that hardest for me to relate to. I don’t feel like I ever totally made a connection to him and, since he is a large part of the story that was a little disconcerting. I felt for Keenan but I found myself glazing over his parts of the story. I don’t feel like he was as compelling of a main character as he should have been.
Then there is sweet Donia, I was honestly taken aback by some of her part in this story. I wish there had been a little less focus on Keenan and Aislinn and a little more background on Keenan and Donia.
For these reasons I am giving this story 3/5. It’s a great book, especially if you like fairies, but I felt it was lacking in a few major ways. I still enjoyed the writing and will continue with the series, maybe I will feel more connected the Keenan and Donia if I do!

I really love this little gem of a book! A fairy tale full of faeries, a strong female protagonist, and nice ending--not your typical happily-ever-after! It's a YA book and a good one to boot!

The characters in this are so dry. Aislinn has zero personality outside of being able to see fairies! I'm almost 100 pages in, and nothing has happened!

The plot: Keenan needs a Summer Queen in order for his court to continue because they draw off the magic of their Queen. He's gone through several hundred girls already, and he pretends to be a human to look for another girl. Ashilin is a normal human girl that catches the eye of Keenan, but the ghosts of the ex-summer girls are trying to save Ashilin.
I wanted to skip this book after reading about a fourth of it. I barely remember this book even though I read it an hour ago.
But not to worry, the beginning of the book is the worst part, and it gets steadily better.
The ending is questionable, as I wasn't sure why everything worked out in the end. Ashilin basically decides for everyone what is going to happen. It would have made a better book if sacrifices and choices were actually made, other than one mortal girl ordering around everyone.
It's not the worst YA i've read, although if I was the editor, I would have made the beginning make about ten times more sense than it did.
The book just seemed so contrived, and the plot was so linear and forced. The conflicts never felt natural. This is how the plot unfolds:
All of a sudden Ashilin drinks the summer wine, and she is told she is going to die, therefore forcing her to choose between the mortal world (death) and living at the Summer court for her survival.
Even though that was the central conflict keeping her in the story, at the end, she supersedes it, and Ashilin never even knew she was in any danger of death.
The character Keenan, the Summer King, (oh my god the name Keenan. Was Oberon not a good enough for you?)
I couldn't tell who he was in love with. He seems to just always be in love with the girl most conveniently close to him. Honestly, he was just falling in love with every girl he saw. There was no explanation for why he was in love with Ashilin herself, although apparently this was not REAL love.
GAH. PLEASE, WRITE BETTER PLOTS. OR AT LEAST EVENTS THAT SEEM LIKE THEY COULD ACTUALLY HAPPEN DUE TO THE CHOICES OF INTELLIGENT PEOPLE.
The format of the book was split POVs. I dislike this kind of writing point of view the most because they tend to be very frustrating, mostly due to the POVs of the teenage boy of the story.
They can be written very well, and I have read a few that are great. Unfortunately in YA, guys are pretty one dimensional.
GET GIRL GET GIRL LOVE GIRL WHY CANT I BE WITH GIRL ETC ETC
No exceptions here, as Keenan self angsts for a large majority of this book. I don't think Keenan is supposed to be annoying, but he sure came off like it. He's also extremely wishy-washy, and doesn't know who he's actually attracted to. I sort of blamed this on the fact that he has to get a Summer Queen every couple of years so he doesn't know what a real relationship is, but his lack of commitment was really FRUSTRATING.
Overall, this was a confusing read, the plot conflicting with itself in several places, and the awkward characters could not save Sebastian and Ashilin's sad and doomed love.

It took two tries to finish this book and I've finally finished it. I enjoyed this book a lot, especially towards the end when everything got a lot more interesting. The character development in Ash is my favorite and I can't wait to read more about her and Seth.
It took me forever to get into the story, but now that I finished it, I am intrigued to find out what happens in the next book...
