I liked this better than the movie, because England in the book is still pretty grim, but it's from humanity winding down rather than the Mad Max craziness of the film. (The film really borrows only the basic premise and the character names.) Speaking of casting, the Theo of the book seems more Steve Coogan than Clive Owen.

Wonderful book. So very different from the film
--which almost entirely removed the Christian themes from the story. Great for lovers of Sci Fi, thrillers, and plain old good story telling

Kinda regret watching the film before reading this cause it streamlined the plot so well that it made this book seem exhaustingly long and winding in comparison

Interesting story, well written, but VERY slow burn.

Hmm... I remember reading this when I was a freshman in college and really liking it. Re-reading it as an adult... I kinda hated it... It was so slow moving for about 60% and then BAM everything happened. Somehow there was a lot going on but I was uninterested at the same time.

Not what you expect from P.D. James! A very dark vision of one possible future -- and no Adam Dalgliesh! Important for people interested in how the Christian church can and must offer hope -- but gripping on a number of other levels, too. I couldn't put it down, and it will stay with me for a long time. That says a lot.

The human race has become barren and no children have been born in 25 years. Society has radically changed as a result. It is an excellent thriller and really makes one think. I really enjoyed this book. I have not seen the movie but I understand that it is no where near as good as the book!
