2.5 stars. Mainly because the first half+ of the book was painful. What needed to be set up could have been done in far fewer pages. The second part was pretty exciting once it got rolling. Parts of it could have been expanded & overall the book would have been more enjoyable.
Theo cares very little for others. It doesn’t seem to matter anyway, since male humans have become infertile, and the human race will die out after the last generation is gone. Theo’s cousin is the Warden of England (think a posh dictator), but Theo is happy teaching history to a few adult students.
Or he was until Julian comes to him, asking him to intercede with the Warden to make life better for those that have it difficult. Then he is swept up into her plans and her life.
Fast-moving, dystopian tale with a definite The Handmaid’s Tale vibe.

In the last update I said the climax would me at 98% of progress. I was mistaken, it was at 97%
I love the film adaptation, but hadn’t read this before. It’s a bit different than the film (I think the film made some really good changes). I thought it was helpful as I read this to know that P.D. James was an Anglican and served as a Conservative in the House of Lords, because that helped informed me a little about what her personal perspective and concerns might have been while writing this. The main character Theo is pretty (intentionally) insufferable. Overall book is very prescient and insightful, and provides a lot to think about.
It reminded me of both "1984" by George Orwell and "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood. As with those, though it took me a bit to get into it, once I did, I couldn't stop.
Awful. Not a single character I liked. An interesting premise, but not carried through very well. The plot was so vague it was almost non-existent. Glad to see that Ms James has gone back to writing mysteries.

This is probably the only instance where I will say the movie was better. I found this rather boring and the filmmakers took the essence of it, and made it something very powerful. That said, though boring, it was well-written.
Not overly impressed. Deviated a lot from what I was expecting, I'm not sure why. Have yet to see the movie.
