I am completely and totally in awe of this new collection of short stories. These tales are as dark and beautiful as the myths and fables they are based on, but somehow they seem impossibly richer. Howard has breathed new life and modernity into everything from Greek mythology to the tales of Camelot. Impeccably executed and perfect for fans of fairy tales, myths and magic!

I love this book. Every single one of the stories within this collection pulls you in and doesn't let go. The stories leave you wanting more but I also think some of their power lies in the format. When I try to pick out my favorites I end up just naming almost all of them. It is a collection I find myself revisiting time and time again.

EDIT: if i had to choose my favorites they would probably be The Saint of the Sidewalks, Translatio Corporis, Murdered Sleep, and Once, Future (of course)

I had a difficult time deciding between 3 and 4 stars. I chose 4 because ultimately the great stories in this anthology outweighed the not so good. And none of the stories were bad, but I just didn't understand some of them because they were so unique and out there. Also, a few were good stories, but the subject matter wasnt interesting to me. For example, the main novella was about Camelot, which I have never been very interested in.

I really loved the prose and magical imagery in these short stories and I think they will stick with me for a long time. My absolute favorites were Translatio Corporis, All of our past places, and painted birds and shivered bones.

Nice sequence of stories that can be read IN or OUT of order. Reader's choice.

First half was mostly 4-5 stars (Arthurian story was amazing and could be a book by itself), second half things started to drag and it went down to 2-3 stars :(

A breathtaking collection of short stories. All bar two ended with me getting that little shiver of goosebumps/realisation.

The see-through crystalline prose I remember from an unkindness of magicians playing with a whole toolbox of different ideas at different paces and lengths.

Generally on the creepy end of fantasy, rather than on the fantastical end of fantasy, most of these stories involve myths and stories intruding into our modern world, with a few secondary worlds thrown in.
