In preparation for a trip to England this summer with students, I tackled this short read and am really glad I did! I hadn't read a Sherlock Holmes mystery before, mainly because I thought these books would be boring and outdated. I am so glad this book proved me wrong! Told from Dr. Watson's perspective, in "The Hound of the Baskerville," Watson and Holmes investigate the death of Sir Charles Baskervilles, a wealthy property owner in Devonshire, perhaps the victim of a curse that has long-impacted the Baskervilles family. Holmes and Watson hope to expose the killer and debunk the legend so that Sir Charles' heir can inherit his fortune without fear for his life.
I can best describe this book as creepy. Doyle sets most of the book in the Devonshire moorlands where it's often foggy, and one wrong turn could cause a man to be swallowed up by the Grimpen Mire. Add to this fact that an escaped convict is on the loose and there may be a super-sized hound hunting for its next human meal. Baskerville Hall, the scene of the crime, seems to take on its own frightening personality, and multiple strange and suspicious human characters add to the spook factor. I didn't predict the conclusion of this book, and I would defend it as a first-rate mystery.

While some of the writing can be quite difficult to understand, even for proficient readers, it is overall a well written, genuinely interesting book with a nice plot and decent characters.
Olis ehkä pitäny lukee joku toinen Sherlock eka, mutta oli tää ihan hyvä! Tais vaan löytyy koulun kirjastosta
I read this years ago, and I am now bringing this review to Goodreads. (It also helps that there is a resurgence of S.H. adventures coming through my Little Free Library Shed, too.)
Who doesn't love Sherlock Holmes? Okay, if you are reading this, I am going to guess that you do.
Premise: Wealthy landowner Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead. Holmes and Dr. Watson must investigate the rumors that a ghostly hound is responsible for his death.
This story showcases the brilliance of Holmes deductive reasoning and the author's amazing writing capabilities in imagining and creating his detective character. I love the mental chess match Holmes plays with villains.
But...
We must not forget his trusty side-kick, Dr. Watson who so painstakingly writes down all their adventures. We get his wit and rational thinking, as well.
This is a gripping page-turner that keeps you guessing until the very end. A true classic.

This is the best Sherlock Holmes full story I have read so far, it’s the most gripping and entertaining of them. I would recommend this as the Holmes book people should start as it is the strongest.
