Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and I all need a break from one another now. I have read several of the stories and collections featuring Holmes at this point, and the voice of the stories (usually Watson) is tiring me. Maybe it was the simple mistake of having watched the BBC episode from Sherlock with Cumberbatch and Freeman before reading this source material, but I just found large portions of this to be uncharacteristically dull. I knew where the story was headed, for the most part, and I could just barely hang on to the text while I waited impatiently to get there.
That being said, the damned thing is still a Holmes tale and they are, on the whole, delightful. I think what made this story plod on at a slower pace than what I expected may have been because of the correspondence eating up much of the narrative. There was just too little Holmes. He's *it* and there just wasn't enough of him in this one.

Watson takes the lead! Well sort of, of course Sherlock is there in the background putting all the pieces together even if Watson doesn't realize his friend is around. Everything doesn't go smoothly for our intrepid duo in this one. This ghost hound can't possibly be real, but something is definitely out on the moor with nefarious plans.
I enjoyed seeing Watson try to piece things together and put his investigative skills to the test. We are seeing all of the clues and pieces through his eyes as he sends of his letters/reports to Sherlock. As things begin to come to a head the pressure builds as Watson does his best to protect their charge and keep evil from befalling him as it has so many of his relatives. I liked the mystery and the ambiance of the moors was wonderfully eerie.

Definitely an old fashioned novel but a great mystery.

I think my expectations were too high. I'm not through with Holmes but I think I'll be more appreciative after some expectation adjustment.

I can´t help it - this is my favorite Sherlock Holmes mystery. Maybe because it was the first I read but I do love the moor, the mist, the howling and the legend of the dreadful monstrous dog. It´s a perfect read for a stormy winter´s evening in your favorite chair with a cup of tea beside you. (
