Classic Sherlock Holmes formula done exceptionally well.

another re-read of a book i thought i enjoyed when i read it years ago.
I continue to have mixed emotions about the Holmes stories. As a mystery lover, I appreciate what these stories and this character meant to the genre. But, sometimes the amazing feats of deduction on Holmes' part just make Watson seem dense or they are pure poppycock. That said, this story had a nice set of twists and turns and my main issue with it is that it didn't need an entire chapter at the end to tell us what we already could have figured out. How dumb did the author think the reader was, anyway?
You can’t go wrong with a classic Sherlock Holmes story! This one has enough characters and twists to keep you guessing and still managed to have enough surprise to get me when Holmes explains it at the end.

This is one of my favorite books of all time! A true classic cozy mystery. The quirky, yet brilliant, Sherlock Holmes and the ever loyal, always questioning, Dr. Watson team up again in this eerie, shocking, intriguing crime adventure. I find the plot of this story to be much more complete and easy to read than some of the other Sherlock novels by Conan Doyle. The clues are forward, though the ending is surprising. The audiobook narrator, Derek Jacobi, does an absolutely wonderful job with the various voices and really helps to immerse the reader in the story. I highly recommend the audiobook. It is perfect to listen to in the crisp fall weather of October.
