Rachel and her husband Jack are going to Portugal for Jack’s brother’s wedding. From Rachel’s perspective, Jack is acting weird around his brother’s fiancée, who Rachel finds to be a bit dramatic. They are also accompanied by their friends Paige and Noah.
Most of this story is basic drama. Who is having an affair? Was that a flirty look between these two people? It was a bit annoying to get through when I was looking for an actual thriller. Rachel is the narrator throughout and she’s just so suspicious but won’t communicate with anyone.
There is action at the very end, but it’s the last 50 pages or so. It’s not much compared to the entire book. And you find out so quickly who was responsible.
It was an okay book but I would not classify this as a thriller.

When I first started reading this book I got vibes of Big Little Lies and The Guest List. The drama was tense from the get-go.
There are a ton of secrets and there are plenty of twists and turns. The ending was mine blowing but almost in and over the top way. You certainly will not see it coming!
The entire story focused on infidelity and the mental downward spiral that occurs when infidelity is suspected in a significant other. This is a topic that I shy away from for many reasons. That being said I did not enjoy it near as much as other people might.

The synopsis for The Guilt Trip sounded intriguing and promising, but for the first two-thirds there wasn't a whole lot going on, and then in final third there was too much going on. Meaning - I was never fully invested in this story, and a full disclosure it took me an entire month to get through this novel. It's marketed as a thriller, and yet there wasn't a whole lot of thrill happening at all. I'd say it's more of a domestic drama than anything.
It didn't help that I figured out one of the major plot twists pretty early on, and the characters are all unlikeable (aside from maybe Will). It also felt as though there were one too many secrets. The writing is decent, and the setting spot on, so if gossip, assumptions and domestic drama is your thing you'd probably enjoy it. For me, I didn't hate it but I also didn't love it. Throughout the entire thing, I simply just kept hoping it would get better, and I will say the ending helped.
