A fast moving, well-written book with a deeply intriguing plot...that, unfortunately didn't have the payoff I was hoping for. Worth reading if you like dark thrillers about race, gender, and identity.

I dont recommend the audiobook, especially if you tend to zone out sometimes, The Center has a tendency to jump from one thing to another very quickly. I had a hard time keeping up. And when I finally thought we were getting somewhere with the ending, it ended abruptly, with little to no resolution.

All in all, I wanted a better ending and for The titular Center to have more of a presence in the story.

This novel took a darker turn than I expected and had a surprising insight into class politics. The story lost me a little bit toward the end, but the way it’s ultimately resolved pulled me back in and had me questioning everything I’d read.

"Invite only" the part where she is driven out to the centre, the taxi cab driver really shared how difficult it is to be a minority in a country that constantly looks down on the color of your skin. I cried during those parts, they were so relatable.

so this started a bit slow, which made sense for the narrative & i think it works nicely to establish the narrator. but i feel like somewhere along the way it kinda feel a bit draggy and there were quite a few loose ends bc the author might have tried to explore too much at once.

anisa also gets very unlikable after a while. personally, i don’t mind unlikable narrator but man her classists comments really gets on my nerves at some points.

in terms of the mystery, i kiiinda figured vaguely what was happening early on and
the email basically confirmed to me that cannibalism was involved
. though me figuring that out pretty early didn’t feel like much of an issue tbh.

also props to the narrator of the audio book version bc i adore how she voiced anisa and her narration in general

I love languages and lanuage learning so the idea of The Centre intrigued me, and the reveal closer to the end was kinda interesting a la the type of dark mystery I was looking for when I picked up this book. But I felt like the main character sort of had a net zero development arc, seeming to grow and then almost immediately rescinding that growth by making excuses as to why it was okay to just fall back to complacency, and some of the other characters had almost no change at all (or a sort of sad minor downward trajectory).
