Frederick Douglass' narrative left me overcome with emotion and moved to tears. This is an absolute must read for all lacking an understanding of the horrors of slavery and the cruel capabilities humans, and for all wishing to read a story of truly remarkable courage, passion, strength and perseverance. In a mere 76 pages I felt that I had come to know Frederick Douglass and his story made a much greater impression on me than I expected. Usually accounts of slavery and other horrors of the past feel so far away, so removed from the present day and myself. Perhaps due to the fact that Douglass himself wrote this narrative, or that he escaped to an area of the country that I have lived in, the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass has made a profound impact on me and I will carry it with me for the rest of my life.

I especially liked the appendix, speaking about Christian in America

This account of slavery is sad, disturbing, and endlessly intelligent. Frederick Douglass is very eloquent and honest in telling his own story. One of the great American works of writing, this account cannot be missed by any means. Haunting, grounded, and ultimately necessary reading for all American citizens.
informative

It was obviously a very interesting book, to have such a testimony of slavery is unique. I wanted to use every extract in my classes. However, the English is not always easy to understand so it was hard for me to follow at times.

So incredibly powerful and prophetic.

This was an excellent book. It was a bit tedious at times, mostly because it required real concentration to read and absorb, however, it was incredible writing, and I learned a lot about Frederick Douglass and slavery in general.

This is such an important autobiography. This should be a MANDATORY read for EVERY American. This outlines not only how difficult it was to be a slave but also how it was justified.

Frederick Douglass was a key component to abolitionism to gain traction. This story outlines how our American history has so much blood and pain. This is a tale that ended happily but think of all of those who didn’t make it out..

In the political and social climate of the world today we need to be educated. We need to do the work to reframe from repeating it.
